Wow, you have overcome a big hurdle in the job hunting process by successfully securing an interview! Now is your opportunity to shine! Here are some preparation tips to make sure that the result is success!
Know the company and the industry
Showing that you have taken the time to research the company and the industry is sure to impress on the day! It’s a good idea to find out all you can and a good way to start is by visiting the company website. You could then go on to search online for any interesting company facts or news.
Know the role
It’s really important to understand the role you are being interviewed for so that you are able to prepare properly. Ask for a detailed job description for the position if you have not already received one!
Know the recruitment process
There is nothing worse than being shocked on the day. The last thing you want to do is arrive, assuming you are being interviewed by one person, only to be faced with a panel! Try to find out about the recruitment process and interview format: Is it formal or informal? Will you be required to complete any psychometric tests? How many people will be interviewing you? It’s also good to know the titles of the people who will be interviewing: a line manager’s approach is often very different to one taken by HR.
Bring your CV to Life
The interview is your opportunity to demonstrate why you are the right person for the role. Look at the job description and think of examples of when you have demonstrated the skills required. Remember that skills are transferrable, so you could have demonstrated a skill they are looking for in a completely different context. For example, if they are looking for someone with leadership skills you could think of examples of how you demonstrated leadership at a previous job, at school, during volunteer work. Go on to think of times when you achieved success or when you faced difficult situations and what you did to overcome them.
Be ready for those tricky HR questions
Be ready for those tricky questions that are so often asked: “Tell me about yourself”; "What are your strengths and weaknesses?”; “Why do you want to work for the company?”; “Why do you think we should employ you for this role?” It’s also a good idea to prepare some questions of your own. Make sure that they see just how interested you are in the job.
If you do not believe in yourself, you are going to struggle to convince a potential employer of your worth. Negative thoughts can be particularly difficult to overcome if you have been looking for work for a long time. Keep reminding yourself of your positive qualities and achievements. Write them down, remember them and feel them, particularly as you prepare for an interview.
