Getting to grips with Management Information Systems

Management Information Systems (MIS) speaks to the development of technology- based systems that are utilized within a business. The purpose for each of the different systems is to solve business problems, create efficient operational business systems and in so doing create avenues for new opportunities in a business.

It is important not to view MIS as programming career path. While some MIS jobs involve programming, there are many fields in MIS where programming is not involved. The focus in MIS is more broadly around organization, where the focus of a subject like computer science would be software.

“It is important not to view MIS as programming career path. While some MIS jobs involve programming, there are many fields in MIS where programming is not involved”

The end goal of MIS is to create more efficient and effective business systems where computer science would endeavor to build reliable computer programs as a chief goal. So, understanding programming and software is generally part of the package however, the world of MIS is much broader.

Where to start?

The reality of the job market is that, while the above-mentioned fields are what is ultimately available to grow into, the starting point is usually from a supporting role, where you would come in at a junior level providing technical support and then climbing your way up. This typically would be a help desk position that supports users of smaller computer system with trouble shooting and problem solving on devices such as PC’s, laptops, mobile phones etc.  As you grow in confidence and skills, you should be able to step-up and support larger systems.

In a harsh economic climate like we have at present in South Africa, getting a foot hold into your career of choice can prove difficult. With that in mind, consider looking into internship as a first step in.

The advantage of this approach is that while the money is low to begin with, as an intern, you have room to learn without fear of getting demoted or fired in the event of making the wrong call. It also allows you to get experience and puts you at the top of the list when posts are available for a full-time position, which is where you can start getting the financial growth that we all seek.
