What is a short course?

A short course is a short learning programme that focuses on equipping you with a specific skillset. However, it is non-credit bearing, which means it does not carry credits towards a registered qualification in terms of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

What is the difference between online and distance learning?

You do not need to attend class for either the distance learning or online learning courses

Distance learning

Your textbook and study guide will be couriered to you, while the required assignments are available on the student portal iCan. You would, therefore, need access periodically to an Internet connection to download required documentation and to interact with your lecturer, tutor and fellow students. For some of the distance learning Short Courses, you do have the option to complete the assignment/s online or you can submit via email.

Online learning

Your study material is available on the student portal iCan. You, therefore need a stable Internet connection, smart phone, PC , laptop or tablet in order to access your study material. You can download study material, save it on a device and go back to it when you have time. Assessments are completed online (No posting or emailing of assignments needed), and results are made available on iCan.

I’m new to online learning, where do I start?

Log on to the iCan student portal and find the orientation module of your course. The module gives you all the information you need to help you navigate and become familiar with the workings of your online course.

What will I get after completing my course?

Once you complete your course, you will get a short course certificate. To qualify for this certification, you must:

  • Pass all your assignments
  • Pay up your student account
  • Email clear copy of your ID document to or fax to 086 758 4800

I want to study Events Coordinator, but I do not want to study online. What do I do?

Unfortunately, the Events Coordinator course is only available online. If you cannot study a fully online course, rather opt for one of our distance learning courses such as our Tourism and Hospitality Short course, where you will then receive your study material via courier. Note that all iQ Academy short courses are internet supported which means that you will have access to online support and your study materials and activities are also available on our student portal, iCan.

Do I need to be online all the time to study?

No, you do not need to be online all the time.  Each module has an eBook containing all the course material. You can download the eBook to your device and work through the material while you’re offline.

How do I get academic support?

A dedicated, expert tutor is available online to provide support and assistance. They can answer your questions via iCan messages or the discussion forums. Your tutor can also be contacted by email or telephone.

How do I submit assignments?

For this course, you will submit your assignments online. Find instructions on how submissions work on your online learning orientation module, which is on the iCan student portal. You will be able to do your assignment online and get your results instantly.
